Amoolya Gowda as associate director for Sanju Weds Geetha 2: Being behind the camera requires continuous energy, focus, and quick decision-making
Actress Amoolya Gowda, who lately gained popularity on Kannada television with her appearance in the reality show Bharjari Bachelors, is stepping into a new role in the Sandalwood film industry. The actress, known for her charm and dedication, is now exploring the world of direction. Taking her first steps behind the camera, Amoolya is working as an associate director for the much-anticipated movie Sanju Weds Geetha 2.
In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Amoolya opened up about her vision, the challenges of her new role, and the stark differences between being in front of and behind the camera.

From Actress to Associate Director

Reflecting on her transition from acting to direction, Amoolya shared, "Switching from acting to directing has been a humbling experience. I’ve come to understand that being on the other side of the camera demands constant energy, focus, and quick decision-making. There’s no room for errors or delays. Being an associate director has taught me to appreciate the finer details of filmmaking. From setting up shots to coordinating with the team, I’m learning that direction is as much about creativity as leadership."
Her foray into direction has been an eye-opener, requiring her to adapt to a more fast-paced and demanding schedule.

"Leaving my phone behind felt like losing a part of myself at first"

One of the biggest adjustments for Amoolya has been learning to work without her mobile phone.
She explained, "Leaving my phone behind felt like losing a part of myself at first, but relying on a walkie-talkie taught me the importance of staying present and focused. It’s a different way of working, and while the lack of breaks can be exhausting, the thrill of creating something meaningful keeps me going."

The actress-turned-AD further spoke about the physical demands of her new role, especially under the blazing sun.

"Direction isn’t just about making creative decisions, it’s about being on your feet constantly, solving problems, and ensuring that every element of the scene comes together seamlessly. It’s not just mentally taxing but physically demanding too. I’ve spent long hours under the scorching sun, getting tanned and exhausted, yet pushing through to make sure everything runs smoothly."

She added, "I never realized just how much work goes into creating a single shot until I stepped into the direction team. The pressure is real, especially when the clock is ticking, and the entire team is counting on you."

She added, "There are days when you’re running from one location to another, managing technical issues, coordinating with the crew, and ensuring the actors are ready. It’s a never-ending cycle. While the actors relax between takes, we’re already preparing for the next scene. There’s no time to breathe, let alone sit down and rest."

On the challenges she faced during her menstrual cycle while working as an associate director

"Working during my menstrual cycle has been one of the most challenging aspects of this job. The physical demands don’t ease up—whether it’s running around the set, standing for hours, or coordinating with the team. There’s no time to rest or slow down, even when your body is screaming for a break," Amoolya candidly shared.
She added, "The discomfort, coupled with the intense heat and constant movement, made some days feel almost unbearable. But I reminded myself why I’m here—to learn, grow, and contribute to something bigger than myself. That thought kept me going, even on the toughest days."

That's not all, her newfound role has also impacted her personal routine

"Skincare has taken a hit," she admitted with a laugh. "The harsh sunlight and long hours leave you drained. I’ve been carrying extra sunscreen and hydrating as much as possible, but the tan lines and tiredness are part of the job now."

Despite the grueling nature of the work, Amoolya expressed profound respect for her team:
"I’ve gained immense respect for the direction department. Their dedication and hard work often go unnoticed, but they’re the backbone of any film. Without them, nothing would come together. Every sweat, every challenge, every late night is a step closer to understanding the art of storytelling. It’s tough, but I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything," she shared.
Despite the challenges, Amoolya is embracing this phase with positivity, viewing every difficulty as a step toward growth.
When asked about her long-term goals in the industry, Amoolya expressed her enthusiasm for direction:
"This experience has been transformative. I’ve learned so much in such a short time, and it’s inspiring me to take on more responsibilities. Someday, I hope to helm a project entirely on my own," summed up the actress.
